I really don’t know how to describe “Goodnight Mommy”, I think the horror genre is too little to characterize this film, nevertheless whoever likes a good movie will certainly enjoy it…although enjoyment is not the word I would clearly use, and maybe the best word is sickening or disturbing.
This dark tale begins in a remote place in the Austrian countryside in a beautiful house and tells us the story of two identical twins Elias and Lukas and their mother whom returned from a plastic surgery and the boys seem to believe that she returned different. When i watched the trailer, intrigued by its title, I must say it certainly misguided me and even at the beginning the film itself tries that. The geniuses behind this masterpiece Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz (Written and directed) clearly tried to mislead us up to a point but everything in this sick story becomes clear by the minute. There’s no supernatural thing going on here just people that their minds play tricks on them.
When we bring to our minds children and motherhood we only have in mind what purity, unconditional love and happiness is. It really becomes uneasy to the eye and to our minds when we see a very distorted image of what we believe in general. And this movie relies to that exactly, that something isn’t right that you can’t really understand who the bad guy is.
Goodnight Mommy is not a film where splatter and action is all around, it’s not even extremely violent, it’s a quiet movie, calm and in this peaceful scenery things become so unsettling that sometimes you even close your eyes because it becomes really uncomfortable.
Goodnight Mommy is the best season’s “horror” movie by far, you shouldn’t miss it for anything however uncomforting it may seem in the end you’ll feel rewarded.
As always buona vision ragazzi!
