Gruesome – Silent Echoes

Genre: Death Metal
Country: U.S.A.
Label: Relapse Records
Year: 2025

Silent Echoes marks Gruesome’s return after a seven-year hiatus,  and their third full-length, is a passionate homage (or a love letter as well) to Death’s legendary 1991 album Human, channeling both the technical prowess and the spirit of classic death metal with impressive fidelity. The album, released via Relapse Records, is more than just a stylistic tribute—it’s a heartfelt memorial to Sean Reinert, the late Death drummer and mentor to Gruesome’s own Gus Rios.

From the opening notes of “Condemned Identity,” Gruesome makes their intentions clear: this is Death worship, executed with both reverence and skill. The clean guitar intro in a Middle Eastern mode, the thrashing yet intricate riffing, and Matt Harvey’s Schuldiner-esque vocals all evoke the Human era with uncanny precision. The album’s 33-minute runtime is packed with technical riffing, jazzy solos, and complex arrangements that nod to not just Death, but also progressive death metal pioneers like Cynic and Atheist.

The musicianship across Silent Echoes is top-notch. Gus Rios’s drumming, in particular, stands out—his performance on tracks like “Voice Within The Void (Astral Oceans)” is a clear homage to Reinert’s intricate style, full of dynamic fills and subtle jazz touches. Harvey and Daniel Gonzalez’s guitar work is razor-sharp, blending brutal riffing with melodic leads, while the bass lines add a thick, driving undercurrent to the sound. Silent Echoes is dense and unforgiving, with a production that captures the raw intensity of early ’90s death metal while maintaining modern clarity. The mix is robust, allowing each instrument to shine without sacrificing the genre’s inherent brutality. The album’s atmosphere is further enhanced by existential and introspective lyrical themes, particularly evident in tracks like “A Darkened Window,” which pairs bleak lyrics with equally haunting visuals.

While the album closely follows the blueprint of Human, it does so with enough energy and conviction to avoid feeling like a mere copy. The songwriting is tight, with each of the eight tracks offering memorable moments, even if the hooks don’t always reach the earworm status of their inspiration.

The most common critique is the album’s lack of originality. But Silent Echoes it does more than simply mimic its influences. Gruesome managed to create an album full of technicality, tight songwriting, and the final result captures the essence of Human without descending into parody as they achieved to carve out more personality than most modern death metal releases.

Silent Echoes is a faithful blueprint, but not a carbon copy; an essential listening for fans of Death and technical old-school death metal. It’s a loving tribute that balances nostalgia with top-tier musicianship, even if it sometimes plays it a bit too safe. If you’re seeking the spirit of Human revived with modern precision, Gruesome delivers—ferocious, faithful, and fiercely executed. Silent Echoes is a worthy
