Japan, the land of geisha, samurai, anime (or Japanese kid cartoons as some people call them) and of course metal. This statement shouldn’t come as a shock. Maybe the land of the rising sun (and far east in general) was not known for its metal bands but that is no longer the case. Japanese bands have already shown multiple times how good they are in the extreme sound genres, either by combining metal with their traditional instruments or by playing pure, extreme fucking metal.
GxSxD with their aggressive music and brutal vocals clearly belong to the second case and they do it with success. In “The Adversary”, their second full length album, the band shows us that they haven’t lost their momentum or speed. With just a few “softer” parts, this album is an orgasm of hate, just the way a proper death metal release should be.
The band has passed a weird period after the loss of Kazuhiro Yoshida (original vocalist of the band) and this album is dedicated to his memory, but the rest of them were able to produce something really good, despite that tragic loss. Their sound’s progression is equally impressive though. Ten years after their debut “God Send Death” and eight after their most recent split “Fighting on the Edge”, their sound is now more mature. And the most important fact? They managed to do that without tainting their sound, without getting soft and, last but not least, under difficult circumstances (their original singer’s death). All things considered they deserve a “thumbs up” for this excellent and worthwhile release.
