Every year, the first weekend of November a very special event is organized by the metalheads of North Denmark for the metalheads of North Denmark (and not only them) with the assistance of the municipality of Aalborg and some local banks (yes you heard right) and other companies. It’s the Aalborg Metal Fest ladies and gentlemen! 500 metalheads having fun, drinking beers, singing Dio karaoke, eating hot dogs and of course listening to metal. Due to personal reasons I could only attend one of the three days, but I heard that Cannibal Corpse that played the next day were amazing as well as the Viking folk metallers Huldre from the previous day.
Dark Tranquillity: The previous time I show them playing live was in Greece at Gagarin as a support act to Entombed and Candlemass back in 2002 and they blew my mind back then. After many years and a lot of changes, the band I show here had no relation to my memories. First of all they played without a bass player which was very weird for me. The economic crisis has reached Sweden apparently, but still, you are a metal band not the Doors that had Ray Manzarek to compensate for the bass. Anyway, the band focused on their last 3 albums only, they performed well, but … I mean they didn’t even play Lost to Apathy! Are we serious? Not even one song from the Gallery or the Mind’s I. I got disappointed.
The Black Dahlia Murder: I am not into their sound so much, and I was never a big fan of them, but I have to say respect! Pure brutal perfectionism. It was like having two John Petruccis doing their thing behind a huge wall of insane drumming and fucked up vocals! The singer seemed to really enjoy the show and he was all the time changing weird hats that the audience threw at the stage. At some point he removed his tshirt and he had a big heartburntattoo in his belly hehehe. He must be a guy to hang around! I enjoyed it.
Hatebreed: I wasreally looking forward to see them live. After the soundcheck the venue went dark and the Rocky theme song begun to play from the speakers. Before we see anyone or anything, the band started to play from the dressing room for a couple of seconds before they jump on stage. Hatebreed were celebrating their 20 years and we had the pleasure to hear some of their old stuff! Especially on Doomsayer everyone got crazy. Jamey Jasta wearing a Death tshirt was speaking about unity in metal and that we are all brothers before he started to play songs from their latest albums. He is a charismatic front man, controlling the audience with ease. There was even a circle pit! At the end everybody was happy and we had an anniversary photo all together as you can see….
