Damn I’m lazy…Always had in mind to post it on Voices From The Underground for streaming…always trying to give it to some editor to review it as I had never time for it (even though I was listening to it all this time on my i-pod) and every time thought that I will finally make it in the end…anyway… Probably now is too early to review it if we consider that the release date via Shadow Kingdom Records is on January 2018, but to be honest we are actually a bit late if you think that this 4 track EP was originally revealed on January 2016 on band’s bandcamp page. This one man project is Trevor William Church’s (son of Bill Church, Montrose’s bassist and later Hagar’s for eight studio albums from Nine on a Ten Scale (1976) to VOA (1984) until Hagar left to front Van Halen) personal music vision with skulls and bones, besides his full time band Beastmaker. What we got here? No Doom or gloomy, elegiac riffing here. Far from his main band direction Haunt is rather an ode to classic Heavy Metal. N.W.O.B.H.M. driven, with 4 catchy songs based on galloping riffs and well distilled ideas and influences from Angel Witch, early Iron Maiden and Cauldron. The mid tempo along with the brilliant solos and the hard driving riffs create a nice atmosphere were all instruments are audible despite the fact that the production is raw (as it should be) and not so crystal clear. The whole package seems to come out of the glorious 80’s as the artwork cover fits like a glove to the analogical sound that is built on harmonized dual lead guitars and the slightly chorused vocals. It may be less than 20 minutes long (approximately 18 min) but it is enough to make some noise and to give Church the proper time to compose a full length equal to the expectations and high hopes of his fans, because Luminous Eyes is a really great effort and now Beastmaker’s vocalist/guitarist has big shoes to fill…I bet we won’t have to wait too long for the debut studio album to come, so until then just push play…
