Heads for the Dead is a three piece all-star band where Jonny Peterson (Just Before Dawn, Wombbath, Massacre, Gods Macabre and more), Ralf Hauber (Revel In Flesh) and Ed Warby (Ayreon, ex-Gorefest, ex-Hail Of Bullets and more) are playing what they know best, pure death metal. The truth is that the band is not presenting in its music any modernisms, however, their music sounds kind of progressive and atmospheric. They are trying to play in a not classic form but in a more darkening way, under a black metal veil and the result are proving them right. The black metal feeling that I refer to, is also revealed on the great Darkthrone’s cover for the classic hymn “Transylvanian Hunger”. “The Coffin Scratcher” is my favorite track of the album but “At The Dead Of Night” and “Creatures Of The Monolith” are of the same level. Jonny Paterson is also responsible for the mixing and mastering with really pleasant results. Blast-beats are not tiring, keyboard use is clever and some of the guitar leads are really great (as in “The Midnight Resistance” for example). For all those who don’t know what Heads for the Dead is all about I have to suggest them to give the band a chance, you won’t be disappointed. A really good release you should check out.
