Haemotoxins, hemotoxins or hematotoxins are toxins that destroy red blood cells, disrupt blood clotting, and/or cause organ degeneration and generalized tissue damage. The term haemotoxin is to some degree a misnomer since toxins that damage the blood also damage other tissues. Injury from a haemotoxic agent is often very painful and can cause permanent damage and in severe cases death. Loss of an affected limb is possible even with prompt treatment.

Haemotoxins are frequently employed by venomous animals, including snakes (vipersand pit vipers) and spiders (brown recluse). Animal venoms contain enzymes and other proteins that are haemotoxic or neurotoxic or occasionally both (as in the Mojave rattlesnake, the Japanese mamushi, and similar species). In addition to killing the prey, part of the function of a haemotoxic venom for some animals is to aid digestion. The venom breaks down protein in the region of the bite, making prey easier to digest.

Hemotoxin was formed by a very young Michael Chavez (Ripped to Shreds, Condition Critical) being in high school circa 2010 recording songs with a tape recorder, leading to 2013’s debut “Between Forever…and the End” an easy to describe as a Chuck Schuldiner tribute/worshipping record. But Hemotoxin continued and evolved to prog roads blended with tech thrash elements that gave us the strong Alchemist EP, and eventually in 2016 release “Biological Enslavement” and 2020’s “Restructure the Molded Mind”.

Now, with the help of Ripped to Shreds band mate Andrew Lee and long-time friend Scott Fuller on drums, the Pittsburg-based band releases a wisely extended in only 29 minute long excellent “When Time Becomes Loss”.

But there’s more outside help here on “When Time Becomes Loss” featuring several of friends and guest musicians such as: Scott Fuller (Annihilated, ex-Morbid Angel, ex-Havok) is all-powerful throughout, and guest guitar solos by Donnie Small (Laceration, Embryonic Devourment), Andrew Lee (Ripped To Shreds, Azath, Reaver), and Tony Barhoum (Condition Critical, Ex Dementia) that gave an extra boost to the album.

Besides the more than obvious references to Death there are a plethora of thrash influences and the pattern the band uses is based on harmonics and tremolo picked riffs and soloing while the technical melodic parts show Chavez in perfect form. The whole album in its entirety has a natural flow and the many tempo changes are excellent executed and flirts with Pestilence, Cynic and Atheist albums. Highlights : Reborn In Tragedy, Call From The Abyss and Malediction.

The album was recorded and mixed by Andrew Lee at The Weeb Dungeon and mastered by Justin Weis at Trackworx Studio (Agalloch, High On Fire, Pallbearer), the album’s cover artwork—created by Mark Cooper (Slaughterday, Master, Thanatos).
