Genre: Doom
Country: Netherlands
Label: I Hate Records
Year: 2017

It was about time that the Dutch Doomsters Hooded Priest would release their second full length, considering they have been active since 2006. The album was released by I Ηate Records, about a month ago. Hooded Priest, staying true to their roots and the identity they’ve created and established for themselves, released six tracks (well, five actually, since “Dolen – Exiting The Real” serves more as an intro than an actual). In “The Hour Be None”, the band used frequent alternations in rhythms and vocal manipulation, making this album stand out from the plethora of Doom / Sludge releases of the year. For the most part, the music is following traditional Doom structures, with heavy riffing and galloping drumming, that blend nicely with melodic vocal crescendos. There are some good ideas, like the rhythm alternation I mentioned earlier, that manage to break the monotonous character of the genre, but nothing new or out of the box thinking here whatsoever. I find it to be a bit dry, soulless even, regardless of the strong dynamic. I don’t know; there were moments that I felt dissapointed. It’s hard to find a Doom album that will spark my interest, nowadays. Hooded Priest may have tried, but I’m not sold on them. It’s a decent release that deserves a few hearings; however, none of the compositions or lyrics stuck in my mind. I hope it will win the bet with time, but to be honest, I don’t see that happening. This album will please the fans of Dread Sovereign, Candlemass and early Black Sabbath.

“The Hour Be None” was recorded, mixed and produced by Omega Continuum Productions.
