Ilsa, She Wolf of the SS is a 1975 Canadian Nazisploitation and sexploitation film directed by Don Edmonds, produced by David F. Friedman and written by Jonah Royston. Ilsa is Kommandant of a Nazi prison camp, that experiments upon men, in order to prove via her sadistic experiments, (that almost always are beyond science and just tortures her victims), that women are more capable of enduring pain than men. So therefore women should be allowed to join the Nazi army. But Ilsa is also a hypesexual woman, full of appetite for hedonistic moments beyond limits, featuring a rape of a male prisoner. Unfortunately (for her), she is disappointed ‘cause her current victim eventually ejaculates, and promptly has sentenced him to death. Only one American prisoner, who can avoid ejaculating, manages to use her weakness to his favor. He hopes that the Allies will arrive soon, but a faction of the SS wants to eliminate all evidence and witnesses. Nevertheless an original scenario… and that’s enough to say about its story (if someone id interested can watch the film here). So, having a name inspired or even paying tribute to a character like Ilsa (aka the most dreaded nazi of them all), one could be misleader and think that Ilsa the band is a kind of NS or something band. Thankfully Ilsa that are coming from DC/Maryland are a 100% antinazi (and partially-queer, multi-racial) sludgy crust death metal band that already have released four albums before in 10 years, as this is their first one via Relapse Records. Their sound is doomy, gloomy, fully inspired by Eyehategod, Black Sabbath and Sourvein, featuring elements from crust to hardcore, and from punk to sludge equally spread all over it. We have covered their previous effort ‘The Felon’s Claw’ a really strong release that I still listen in my stereo, but this time the band has moved a little further in terms of songwriting. It’s not that they have added new elements, as the main and actually only difference between their 2 last albums is that now the band’s members seems to have been improved as composers. Still pessimistic almost misanthropists, their sound is like a giant mountain of mud and noise that encloses a hydrogen bomb, ready to explode to our heads. If not a must buy, certainly a must hear album. Highlights: ‘Ruckenfigur’, ‘Nasty, Brutish’, ‘Hikikomori’, ‘Cosmos Antinomos’ and the seven minute epic ‘Drums of Dark Gods’.
