Genre: Death/Black Metal
Country: Sweden
Label: Pulverised Records
Year: 2016

I knew the Swedish band IN AETERNUM only as name, but to be honest I had never listened anything of them. A friend of mine suggested them as material for fans of Morbid Angel, and after a rough research I saw that they are mentioned as a black/death metal band, while they exist since 1994. Until 2007, when they released the ‘Curse of Devastation’, they were quite consistent in discography, but since then they remained inactive (except a collection release in ’14), up to this year’s ‘The Blasphemy Returns’.

Here we are dealing with an EP consisting of four tracks of a total duration of about 18 minutes, but only two of them are new. More specifically, the ‘Majesty of Fire’ is a fairly good revamped edition of the song from their first album, 1999’s ‘Forever Blasphemy’, but without requiring more criticism, while the ‘I Am Elite’ is a cover of the homonymous song of their compatriots blackmetallers, War (a band of David ‘Blackmoon’ Parland, ex member of Dark Funeral and Necrophobic, who commited suicide in 2013), in a version more heavy, more massive. That’s all with these two tracks.

Let’s talk now about the two new ones. Fast, aggressive death metal with many black metal pieces, which actually remind of Morbid Angel, perhaps Behemoth too (this name, in fact, had also the Swedes from ’92 to ’94), while, and without to be excessive, at some parts had a Melechesh-feeling, but – and I emphasize – I do not mean the Israeli band’s oriental melodies, but only this dark, mystical aura; the distinctive eerie atmosphere. The riffs are quite interesting and one of the best parts of ‘The Blasphemy Returns’, but I have an objection, a major objection: why to add these unacceptable solos which remind of a bad thrash band of the ’80s? These guys indicate that they know how to make music, so it is a crying shame to ruin such a good effort with this… discordance. What a pity…
