Despite the young of their age, Deathstorm come with their second full album called Blood Beneath The Crypts via High Roller, to stick your head in their music blender. These Austrians are not kidding and one single listening of their new album will confirm that. We had to know what morbid minds came up with this album so…
Welcome to Metal Invader. First of all, we would like you to give us a few info about Deathstorm’s bio.
Hey, thanks for having me. To sum it up we formed in 2010 and released a four track EP entitled “Storming With Menace” via I HATE Records followed by our debut full length “As Death Awakes” and the initiation of a second guitar player in 2013. After some gigs with the new line up we released another EP last year called “The Gallows EP”. This year we teamed up with High Roller Records to release our second LP “Blood Beneath The Crypts”. That’s the main information to get some overview of how things are developing.
So it’s “Blood Beneath The Crypts”. Some info of how your new album was made and recorded please?
Everybody collects his ideas and presents them within the rehearsal room, this is how the magic works. We then put together what belongs together. The only difference this time was that we knew what we wanted and how to get there. Since records nowadays tend to get longer and longer we wanted to keep things short and simple. There’s nothing more annoying to me than records with an excess in length. Recording wise we chose the same studio as last time with the same engineer as well. We recorded the whole album within 5 days if I’m correct – nothing big or fancy, just us doing what we had to do.
How about your influences?
When it comes to lyrics it is mainly horror movies and horror literature as well as all sorts of morbid things. I work as a mortician which also supplies me with loads of inspiration. Music wise we are mainly influenced by ourselves. We found our sound and are now developing it. Back in the days I’d probably have mentioned bands like Kreator, Sodom, Slayer etc. I guess it’s no secret where our main influence came from..
Besides the music, one other very interesting part is the lyrics. What are your songs about? What’s the story behind the Murder Of A…?
As mentioned above horror is something that I’m really into and where I draw a lot of inspiration from. So most of the lyrics deal with horror flick content or just some stuff that pops up in my head. “Murder Of A Faceless Victim” was influenced by reading an article on Giallo movies and Italian cinema in general, which should be obvious to people who are interested in that kinda genre. The content on the other hand deals with people doing what they have to do.
What do you think about the revival of thrash metal the last few years? Is the scene overpopulated?
I don’t understand why people like to talk about some kinda revival. There have always been bands playing this style of music since the beginning of it. Throughout the 90’s/00’s there were bands like HYPNOSIA, INFERNÖ or GEHENNAH among many others who kept the flame burning. Besides some obvious exceptions I don’t really care of what is going on nowadays.
What’s the deal with the underground scene in Austria these days?
Kringa, Ewig Frost, the Abhorrot circle and the Triumphant circle are worth to mention. Other than that there is nothing serious going on within the Austrian borders.
Which thrash albums did you listen to during the last year and blew you away?
I guess they were the same as always: all the old stuff by Slayer, Dark Angel, Kreator, Sodom, Sepultura etc.
I see you’re very active when it comes to performing live. Do you have any plans for supporting your new album?
This unfortunately seems to be some sort of a miss-information. We don’t play nearly as much live as we’d like to. So far we didn’t manage to put up a proper tour rather than only playing one-off gigs across Europe. For this year we still have some gigs planned which I cannot reveal yet, so stay tuned for their announcement.
An alien comes to you and he asks you for the 5 best records made by man, otherwise he’ll destroy the earth. What are your choices?
I wouldn’t tell him anything but rather watch that whole putrid planet go down in flames!
This invasion has come to an end. Last word is yours.
