Interview with Decapitator (Chainsaw)

Chainsaw. The musical phenomenon that made us embrace darkness again and show some more love to Lucifer. The band that made young girls scream and mature women start dripping. The band that smashes pozer attitudes with an iron baseball bat. We decided to interview them. We spoke with Decapitator. Brace yourselves.

First of all, good evening… Thanks you for squeezing me in a small space in your datebook between the “Order kebab from Charokopou” and “Buy screwdrivers for poser haunting”. What’s the deal these days?

Good evening and thank you for your hospitality and interest. These days we’re visiting a monastery known for its cuisine, spas and wild parties day and night. At the same time we have almost finished writing our next album and hopefully somewhere between October – November we will enter the studio to record it.

Chainsaw were born in September 1997 and released two rehearsal tapes in 1998. Then suddenly, everything froze down. They came back fiercely in December 2013. Why did it take you so many intervening years to regenerate Chainsaw?

The first years that the band dissolved was difficult to find members who wanted to play this kind of music, so the whole thing died. The idea to resuscitate Chainsaw came from a friend, when he heard our tapes and then proposed to record and release the tracks again. So, after the demo was recorded in 2013, we went as a full – band for a new record.

Apart from you, Decapitator, who you are the only original member, integral members of the band now are: Witchkiller, the charmer, and Nuctemeron, who’s a member of a truckload of bands. How did you come to this lineup? What was the initiation process?

The first one was chosen after repeated phone calls to lines predicting signs, because I had to find the proper astral sign to join the band while the second one appeared in a documentary concerning a forgotten indigenous tribe unaware of culture and specially keys.

The compositions of the album are results of a collective ceremony with the current lineup or were there tracks that existed beforehand, so you simply recorded it altogether?

The songs existed as compositions but took such a kick in the ass during the recordings, which definitely gave them another character and a much stronger effect.

The cover art of the “Hill of Crosses” is otherworldly scandalous. Hell, massacres and intestines ideal for a cannibalistic feast. Whose creation is it?

Someone anonymous in 18th century created it. Also, we liked that it philosophically it refers to the first Inferno record and is away from the cartoonish covers that numerous bands of the genre chose to use today.

“Hill Of Crosses” was released on CD format through Chainsaw Distro and a ballsy vinyl format through Hell’s Fire Records. Why the releases were divided this way?

The first companies we found and were interested in us, neither could we afford them nor they took us in the way we were. Some asked us to change our name, logo or the way penguins mate. When we spoke with Hell’s Fire we immediately reached a deal, since both sides wanted the same things and we are actually honored to see our record being released by this company. Well, since Hell’s Fire doesn’t release CD’s, we made a deal with Chainsaw Distro and our problem was solved.

Bulldozer: A band – monument for you and for many of us, an accusation surely justified. You’ve chosen to make a cover of “Whiskey Time”. First;y, why did you choose this song and secondly what was the reaction of AC Wild when you contacted him?

We had some covers into account before the recordings and we ended up covering «Whiskey Time» and «Warchild» from Running Wild’s demo. The first one seemed a safer choice that’s why we preferred doing it. When we contacted Bulldozer and we sent our cover, they answered immediately that they liked it a lot and that it’s an honor for them to be a part of out record. When you listen to things like that from people who have been your idols for the past 20 years, you don’t want anything else.

Feasts of meat and booze, maniac killers, women. I imagine that the lyrics are plucked from your daily routine. Incidentally, whose creation are they?

I personally write the lyrics, which refer to daily problems faced by the average commoner, the neighbor, the driver who carves his nose at traffic lights, the jobber. Meanwhile, they touch sensitive aspects of our society and are full of tenderness and compassion for the painful and injustice life of the clergy.

In the record’s booklet you firstly thank our dearest friend and poser-killer, Satan. What’s your relationship with him? Is he the secret background hero that gave impetus to your drive?

Yes, I don’t think that the album came out with the help of Christ!

Will we ever watch you perform (a satanic congregation of course) in the near future or are you busy running Metal Police?

It would be ideal to perform while classical music records would burst into flames; hoses would throw tzatziki to the audience and entrance would be allowed only to those intoxicated. Just because this is difficult to be properly organized, the future seems pale. As for the leadership thread that belonged and will always belong to Gehennah. We can only look at them with awe and great respect.

The ending is yours. State anything you like; even a hateful manifest.

Progressive, religion and dietitians are the plague of this world. We will always confront them.
