Nadiwrath should not be considered an underdog of the Greek black metal scene and their latest record “Circle of Pest” is proof of that. The band has been active for eight years and serves the raw, destructive essence of black metal, therefore a talk about their music and their views about the black metal scene would be really interesting.
Hallo, what’s up with Nadiwrath recently?
To be honest there’s nothing active going on. We spent a lot of energy for our new album, which was released a few months ago with a title “Circle of Pest” and now we’re looking to make use of some tracks that we left out of the record. There’s already a four way split out “Death to Thy World” and the bands that partake, apart from us, are Frostmoon Eclipse from Italy, Triumfall from Serbia and The Last Knell from Chile. I believe we will soon have it on our hands and the distribution will start in Greece as well.
How’s the promotion of your new album “Circle of Pest” going?
Could be better and could be worse. The promotion / advertising of the record is mainly a job for the label and we are not completely satisfied with their part. In Greece the feedback has been really positive and the copies were sold out, which is pleasing for us. I hope the label will soon send us more to give out to everyone who didn’t catch up.
I think there are more black metal elements this time and less black / thrash / punk compared to your debut “Nihilistic Stench”. How did that change occur?
It’s exactly like that. Four years have passed since “Nihilistic Stench” and the final form of “Circle of Pest”. All this time, our influences changed, we improved as musicians and we dedicated more time in composing tracks.
Share some information about the time you spent in the studio when you created the record.
The only hours we spent in the studio all together was at the drum and vocal part and there’s nothing really to share, we were fully dedicated to what we were doing at that time. Fortunately or unfortunately, the advance of technology helped a lot.
What do you think could be the motive for someone to get in the process of creating what they call anticosmic music, and what motivated you in the first place?
The disgust for anything human and the eternal attraction to total death, the abyss and chaos!
From the song titles one can see the nihilistic nature of Nadiwrath, for example at Dominance of Negative Thoughts, No Pity For Your Kind, Heading Towards Absolute Darkness… On the other hand, there’s compositions like “Rebuilding Your World” και “A New Humanity”. Do you want to talk about the content of these tracks?
Nadiwrath saute the end of the world and worship death. These two tracks are for a world that, before the end comes, will believe in our ideologies.
What’s the composing process of band and who are the main composers?
There is no specific process, inspiration and improvement above all so that we write something that takes us to the next level, we didn’t want to write a second “Nihilistic Stench”… And the next (if there is one) will not be another “Circle of Pest”. The music of “Circle of Pest” was written by me and Semjaza, whereas “Nihilistic Stench” was written by me in it’s entirety.
Do you have a standout track from “Circle of Pest”? The first for example, is pretty much a hymn…
No, I can’t pinpoint any track because I simply see them all as hymns. It may sound like I praise myself but if you’re not the creator of the track you can’t understand what we feel about the music we create. I like the fact that some listeners baptize a track as a hymn though.
What do you think about the current Greek black metal scene and what you like to change about it?
We simply have one of the best scenes worldwide. In terms of releases, whoever sits and examines the subject seriously, the last three years there have been releases which have been among the best of the year (if not the best) and I’m not going to mention them… Whoever is involved knows them. Also, more and more bands sign with important foreign labels and despite our geographic location and the difficulties we have with transporation, you see organizers choose us for their lives. I don’t know if “change” is the correct word, but I would like to see more support for the Greek scene from the Greek scene itself one day. We need to understand that the Greek scene isn’t only about the bands… It’s also the people, the stores / labels, the organizers, the zines etc… Assuming that every scene is a machine, our machine has long stopped working. I would like to go into detail and mention the responsibilities or better, the duties (as I imagine it) that we all have… But I don’t know when I will end.
Are there any plans for gigs in and out of the country?
For now not, there are some plans about a live but we have very limited time with our jobs and the other bands everyone’s involved with. The future might be different… Who knows.
Have you been influenced by any non-black metal bands? How did you come to realize music is your passion?
In the early days, we had influences from the punk scene (Discharge, G.b.h).. But now are influences are black metal bands only. When it comes to me, when I spinned “Aske” at home and the neighborhood started stinking from the ash of the burned church, I had fully understood the meaning…
The black metal scene is split at times between the ones who fully condemn the huge popularity of a band and the ones that don’t mind, as long as the ideology of the band isn’t corrupted in order to fit to a bigger, more mainstream audience. As musicians and people who live the difficulties of having a band today, what do you believe on that subject? Can you imagine Nadiwrath as a very famous band?
Firstly, you need to understand that black metal is against the mass so automatically it’s also against the mainstream… It has always been and always will be. There are bands however like Watain, who have gotten into the mainstream but fully stand for and serve the true purpose of black metal. That’s good, because seeing and listening to these bands might grab the attention of someone to deal with the real ideologies of black metal. Sadly, these examples are very limited and the bands that formed the sound once… now deserve to be pissed in the mouth. No, I don’t imagine us and I don’t want to imagine as famous, I prefer fantasizing about the end of all the famous bands and the labels that poison black metal.
Who would be the five most important black metal records of all time?
- Satyricon – Nemesis Divina
- Immortal – Pure Holocaust
- Mayhem – De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
- Emperor – In The Nightside Eclipse
5.Burzum – Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
…. And many more…
You have taken a lot of steps ahead since your formation in 2007. Are there any specific goals for the future of Nadiwrath?
The only thing we care about is to improve at all levels, so that what we create opens new gates for the listener to deal with what we call black metal more deeply. Writing a record is easy, writing a record that will speak to the listener and influence him is harder.
Thanks for your time, the last words are yours!
Thanks for the support and the interview. Keep supporting the underground and the local scene.
