Interview with Necro from Enshadowed

A group that is known to many people both within and across the borders. A group that, despite all the changes that passed over the years, made a very good album in 2013 and continues to work on new material. A group that its debut in 2002 is considered by many a classical album. They have conquered scenes at home and abroad and have opened concerts for big names in the business, such as Mayhem and DHG. Necro (guitars), answers questions on all subjects:

The band counts 17 years of existence, but we have only seen three albums. Why was there such a long delay of 10 years from the second to the third?

We operate without timeline of a band that intends methodically to become known. The “every two years disc” that has become an institution of the music industry and tour managers, does not concern us at all. So being a free spirit, allows you to not rush and create without pressure.

Also, why we saw the band taking a different direction musically with each release?

Simply because it is very boring to create the same old thing, just to make your music enjoyable for the concept of “first editions” and “true”. We write music without thinking about required limits and signs. For me, it has more identity than repeating structures of “Messengers of the Darkest Dawn”. You know as a leading composer of my band, it is very easy to write ten other disks in the same level and with the same recipe.

Among other things, there were many changes in members. Is it one of the reasons we did not see the band make many live appearances?

A lot of things play a role. The live shows do not have much sense, the music travels anyway, and you do not need to become “parsley” or chase organizers and connections.

What do you think about all the fashions that come and go in the black metal in general, in the recent years? For example, from 2005 and onwards everyone wanted to play aggressively and quickly, then fashion became the Majestic and playing with keyboards, in the recent years began a long trend of many bands to the Orthodox and many bands reminiscent of Watain and Deathspell Omega and when Behemoth released a number of albums 7-8 years ago, many have followed this style in sound and image. Recently we see a shift to more primitive roots thrash / black projects. Does Enshadowed follow the stream or is it a band that likes to play whatever it likes regardless of what is in the foreground and what others are doing?

Yes and no, as you will find influences in our music in some of the bands you mentioned, but again the music we create is a bit personal for us. If we want to play black/death like it was made 20 years ago we will do it even if the mass of the new generation dislikes it. All this, is very minor for us.

I confess that the last album became my favorite very quickly. Many nice and well worked compositions, fast paced changes and slow atmospheric passages with melodic mid-tempo parts. Generally you have created a very magical atmosphere. Serpent also gives change in the interpretations of songs, many different colors and hues in his voice and raising the bar of performance to the maximum. Did you work individually the tracks or with team spirit depending on how the songs must sound? Did Serpent record with some instructions or unbothered without fetters to destroy everything with his aggressive and leveling voice?

Serpent has a particular way that contributes to the composition, so we leave him always free to thrive. There is always a team spirit in the final version of the songs. For me personally, a movement is the representation of the time that happened, like a photograph, which I look at with respect. When art becomes form, leaving the artist and is an independent existence. However good or bad and was the album, just look always what then do.

Should we expect anything new in the future? Are you working on any new material? When to expect?

Yes, we believe we are going to have new stuff in 2015.

The upcoming release will move in the same musical style? As I mentioned earlier we were accustomed to changes from disc to disc.

Uh, no, I would say, the death metal elements have already been previously. Once again we are going elsewhere. We Re-tuned. The new material is eccentric, psychopathic and with personal character.

Are you going to record again in Devasound? Why did you choose this place? Many bands as of late use this studio. It is easier for you to write there?

I freelance as a sound engineer in that studio. The result in cooperation with Fotis Benarndo always works. Nevertheless, we are in a period of compositions and we have to decide where to place the recordings of the upcoming disc.

From what I know, you recently started working in your own recording studio. Are we going to see the new material recorded there? Are there bands that come to you for recordings because of the name of the band, or because you know people in the scene?

Since 1998, I am in the domestic audio cycles, so clearly that was logical to have helped as well. Yes, the Descent studio is the space where several things are made. The new album of Acherontas was completed here. At this time, the debut of Chaosbaphomet is being recorded and the full length of Nipenthis was just finished. The mastering of the new EP of Disolvo Animus is also finished and we are progressing positively and with much devotion to the object of production that I studied and love.

The first album “Messengers of the Darkest Dawn” is considered quite important for the Greek black metal scene of the early 00s. You were playing fast, aggressive and furious black metal in an era when most bands were trying to follow a more majestic sound and become more widely known by following steps of known bands that were in their best days then (COF, Dimmu Borgir, Emperor etc.). The compositions are awesome and there are many very good tracks in the disc that I believe, is why you play them live and the world digs them. Who was the leading member in the composition of the disc? And why, after it changed so much in aspect of style (Intensity)?

As I said earlier, we do not intend to become famous or necessarily to be liked. Thus said, we operate spontaneously without a concept of fan base. However, when I composed the “Messengers ..” I was only 18 years old, and is indeed a masterpiece with tremendous energy. I hear it as a listener and admire the vibe of it, really lived up to the bone. Now in my 32, OK for sure I would say that the “Intensity” was bad experimentation and ultimately wrong line up that just occurred. It is no coincidence that it plays no part in this live album. Forget it!

Some band members play in other bands as well, is that why Enshadowed comes in second place? Do you wish you could all spend more time in the band?

Uh, no, that’s not true, we all play in other formats, but that does not affect anything.

Are you still part of Pulverized records? Do you have a contract with them, or we are going to see you somewhere else for your upcoming release?

Our agreement is for one album only. Beyond that it will show … We will prefer however a company based in Europe.

Is there a potential concert or support? We might see you in a tour?

I do not think so. This phase is for individuals that either have a large tongue and money or much good luck combined with excellent music. We are far away from all this background and we do not base our music on fraudulent rockstar dreams.

Last words are yours! I hope to have news from you soon!

Soon, a new nostalgic split EP and a new Paranoid album that few will understand.
