Iron Kobra. A band so controversial, like an argue on whether Osama (you know who) is dead or alive. Take it or leave it.
Iron Kobra is back with its second full length album, entitled “Might and Magic” two years after the release of “Dungeon Masters”. Clearly more matured and with a significant development on their skills and songwriting. Classic heavy metal from the fountain of N.W.O.B.H.M., but with a little, more speedy touch. The compositions and the way they’re executed makes you feel as if the tracks were actually recorded back then. The influences of the band are kind of obvious; I can definitely see some Tokyo Blade mixed with some Running Wild in here. “Might and Magic” is a great puzzle of slow, mid – paced and fast parts, with many melodies, as well as lead guitars and solos jumping from the past into a 2015 production. Vocals are mostly clean, with high – pitched bursts scattered here and there, but there’s no overuse. Highlights of the record is “Watch the Skies”, a track with brilliant changes between melodies and rhythm and an exceptional solo, and “Born to Play on 10”. A weak moment of the album is “Spirit Archer”, as its long duration and lack of inspiration, tire your ears.
Even though Iron Kobra did a good job on the record and their hard work is obvious on many levels, the production of the album is a kick in the goolies. Simple, faceless, with no character. The low quality of the production ultimately lowers the general quality of “Might and Magic”, although the songwriting is good. One last thing the bad should take into consideration is that at some points the tracks were predicable. Surprises are always welcome.
