Coming from the distant Chile, Iron Spell were set up in 2014 with the very good and promising demo titled “Heavy Metal Witchcraft”. Since then the band worked hard (released 4 singles!) and that’s evident in the compositions that despite their simplicity, they have things to give the listener. This of course falls far from the accusation of Iron Spell could be the next Iron Maiden or even new Enforcer. In fact, they are not considered as a characteristic example of the so called N.W.O.T.H.M. since the element of speed is (consciously) absent and also, since the band relies more on the melodic choruses rather than speed, although I don’t think that it’s even their goal to become a benchmark of this genre. Even though every song is trying to unfold a short horror story, which gives an extra point as it’s not the easiest thing to narrate a good story especially through a song of 3-5 minutes, the musical possibilities of the Chileans seem to have limited scope. Without being bad, they fail to deliver something more; in short, they cannot compose something that great in order for them to stand out amidst the genre they love and serve you; a genre that has in turn been saturated. Looks like a release that was made for “internal consumption” by friends of the genre, solely for the style’s enthusiasts, regurgitating the same old thing without offering anything new or like I said, something special. Unfortunately the rank will just hit the base; a gold yet average release and nothing more.
