Οnce upon a time, America blew our minds with its metal scene, which was so intense, high quality and unique, something that couldn’t be easily ripped off by their partners in crime outside of the country. It was not the only scene with such characteristics, but as of today, speaking safely since time has gone by, we can say that it was truly unique. Also, just because nothing happens on purpose, America is once again back on track with some decent groups, such as Twisted Tower Dire, Verscythe, Visigoth and Ironflame, even though the first ones are quite older. Ironflame take us back in the 80’s, as their sophomore record comes out one year after their debut. The most impressive fact is that in “Tales of Splendor and Sorrow”, Andrew D’ Cagna takes the mic and does a great job. All guitar and vocal lines are more that carefully worked. The entire album is full of passion and melody in all performances, like how every heavy/power album should be. Wormbug-like choruses, lyrical melodies alternated with razor-sharp heavy metal riffs, uplifting rhythms and a slight epic aura in some of the songs. All of them though make you want to scream, shout and mumble. The only thing is that the drums should sound a little more massive. The album in general sounds perfect, just like the first one, but songs such as “Vengeance Rising” and “Our Great Defender” seem a little more ambitious and indicate the band’s progress in time. I hope they go on like that. Easily one of the best of the year.
