Job for a Cowboy – Sun Eater

Genre: Deathcore/Death Metal
Country: U.S.A.
Label: Metal Blade Records
Year: 2014

Here’s a band that never made me feel anything special about them. Why? Well i do not know. A lot of people love them whereas I cannot find anything interesting, however many times I have tried to listen to this album.

The first tracks are quite boring I would say. Other songs are fast and aggressive, others more prog / technical, but in general they are overdoing it for my taste. Also during the entire album for some reason, the pace slows down when it comes to the solo. Generally the solo is played in a ultra fusion prog tech style with big breaks in lots of cymbals, the bassist going up and down on the fret board, as if the whole band at that point wants to simply show off, which I do not comprehend yet why, since you can distinguish the signs of their musical education from the beginning of the album. Perhaps “The Stone Cross” is one of the songs that got me, especially from the strange riffing and the drummers “painting” moments on the drums. But that’s it. Also “A Global Shift” with superfast drumming and powerful rhythms. All this aggression is somehow well executed. This could be the best track of the album.

You cannot say, as musicians they are awesome and very well trained, but this thing alone is not enough. It feels like, there is too much complexity for nothing. The production is very good and the whole sounding helps to understand and distinguish the technical level of the band. It’s just the album that doesn’t amuse me unfortunately. I really can’t say, even though I consider myself to be very open-minded to new ideas and experimentation. It’s just this particular release does not move me at all. I guess, maybe I cannot get used to this “free” feeling in the compositions in metal in general.

If I had to grade the album I’d give it a 3/6. In the aspect of musicianship and technique though, I would easily grade it with 5, thus in conclusion I will give a…

3.5 / 6
