I can’t be sure of the artist’s motives behind every release. It’s not really my position to say and to be honest, I don’t really care either. What I care for, is whether the material that comes my way -not only for me, but for those that are reading my opinion and respect it, as well- meets some standards or not. And while we assumed that beloved John Garcia’s move was to create an album in accord to the expected sound, initially with the acoustic versions of Kyuss’s songs and mainly due to his unplugged tour -that if you remember, visited Athens last May- nonetheless the album feels weak. Obviously, it takes courage and it’s very risky to take away the heavy sound of the electric guitar and strip the songs away of any distortion and dense bass lines, especially when we’re referring to legendary tracks, such as “Green Machine” and “Gardenia”. It’s interesting as a move, to change and experiment with tracks like “Space Cadet” and “El Rodeo”. But the truth is, John Garcia’s incredible performance, can’t really save the day, nor the final result. This whole attempt leaves a feeling of sloppiness, which sounds odd, considering the preparation that Garcia seemed that be doing, during the recordings of the album. The 3 new tracks have some good moments, but they’re not something special. Whoever enjoys rather simple compositions or blithe temper, may enjoy this “soft” listen… Yes, you do expect more from such a legendary voice.
