Katagory V’s return to the progressive power metal scene with “Awaken a New Age of Chaos” is both a triumphant comeback and a testament to their enduring musicianship after a decade-long hiatus. The Utah-based band, originally disbanded in 2014, has re-emerged with a renewed sense of purpose and a sound that pays homage to their roots while pushing their craft forward.
The songwriting on “Awaken a New Age of Chaos” is impressively intricate yet remains highly memorable. Katagory V deftly blends complex, driving progressive metal with catchy hooks and aggressive riffing. The album’s arrangements are tight and dynamic, with the entire band operating as a cohesive unit. The dual guitars of Curtis Morrell and Dan Coxey provide both melodic depth and thrash-inspired punch, while the rhythm section—Dustin Mitchell (bass) and Matt Suiter (drums)—anchors the sound with technical precision and conviction.
Albert Rybka’s vocals are a standout feature, delivering a charismatic and energetic performance that sets him apart in the current metal landscape. Rybka alternates between lower registers and piercing falsettos, at times channeling a “Ripper”-esque style reminiscent of Tim Owens. While his powerful delivery elevates tracks like “Empire of Ignorance” and “Prophet of Sorrow,” the frequent shifts in vocal approach can occasionally disrupt the flow on some mid-tempo songs such as “Legacy in Blood” and “Night Wing”. Nevertheless, Rybka’s range and presence place him firmly among the upper echelon of progressive power metal vocalists.
The production on “Awaken a New Age of Chaos” is clean and powerful, allowing each instrument to shine without sacrificing the album’s overall heaviness. The cover art by Ed Repka sets an appropriately dramatic tone, reinforcing the album’s classic metal spirit infused with modern energy.
