Τhe sophomore album for the Hellenic Black Metal superband, Katavasia, has arrived and it is already almost two months ago. For those who don’t know, all members of Katavasia are already crossing a remarkable career in the field of music, through bands such as Varathron, Aenaon, Hail Spirit Noir, Agnes Vein, Melan Selas, among plenty of others. “Magnus Venator”, however, differs Iin infinite points with the band’s debut, through which they introduced themselves in 2015, “Sacrilegious Testament”.
In general, “Magnus Venator” has a huge resemblance to the epic heavy-like black metal played by Varathron, enriched with more harmonies and trembling riffs that give more melodic and pagan black details from Scandinavian’s scene. However, it has its own sound identity. One cannot easily say that it might be identical to some other album of the same genre. This is obviously due to the fact that all of the Katavasia members have each given their own personal and sound signature to the album, making it difficult to rank in a very specific context. “Magnus Venator” might be closer to new releases of older bands of the same phase, but it does not disappoint in any case the fans who are constantly looking for new bands that have something different to offer to a fan. Katavasia have achieved this.
“Magnus Venator” is way better (and different) than “Sacrilegious Testament” on many levels and certainly belongs among the best albums of the year, regardless of the personal choices of each listener, something that automatically raises Katavasia to the most preferable music of the year!
