Khemmis, Akhmim in Egyptian, is the Greek name of the ancient Egyptian city that was named Ipu or Khent-Min and that later during the Greco-roman period was named Panopolis, the city of Pan, because Greeks were identifying god Min as their own Pan. Besides Min, the god of fertility, another local deity was worshipped there, Aprit. The American Khemmis besides that they chose this name because it sounds cool, they mistakenly associated it with the name of the city that the god of sun, Horus, was born. Horus was the sun god of Egyptian mythology, identified with Apollon and his depiction was either as a hawk or a man with the head of a hawk. But enough with mythology, not even the lyrics of the band have that as a theme. In 2015, in the column Voices Of The Underground, we had presented the impressive “Absolution”, but no one ever reviewed it, well… that is how we roll… Khemmis’ music has been very rightfully called Doomed Rock ‘N Roll and is a mixture of influences and elements that we can listen in Solstice, Atlantean Codex, Sleep, Pallbearer, Neurosis, High On Fire, while their music could be also easily heard by fans of Mastodon or Baroness. The dirty sound, the doomness of the melancholic guitars, the stretched solos, the compositions that go on and on remind more of a Relapse or Southern Lord band, whereas “Hunted” came from the small and independent 20 Buck Spin. They are modern and not irrelevant, while they blend growls with clean vocals efficiently and that gives an outstanding diversity to the outcome. Their main attribute of course are the guitars that manage with very well crafted and inspired riffs to lead the entranced listener through mazy paths in all 8 songs without a choice, but to surrender to their drift. Proceed and invest in those worthy sons of Denver…
