You’re looking in the Devil’s eyes tonight…
A year has passed since the first appearance of the Dark Lord with the moniker of “King Dude” in Athens. The calling from 3 shades of Black and the dark inviting setting in Death Disco were the keys to open the door to Lucifer. Thomas Jefferson (TJ) Cowgill of Book of Black Earth and Teen Cthulhu and his latest project Cross, has become, undoubtedly, our favorite musician with his magic charms. After a long, never-ending day I was all for seeing my favorite dark folk musician once again. Super excited me.
First on the-smoke filled-stage was Victory Collapse, one of the more interesting post punk / new wave Greek bands at the moment. Counting several years active they have acquired their own audience and a good experience in live shows. Personally, watching them for the first time, made me think that the vocalist has by far the cleanest “crystal clear” voice that I’ve heard in quite a long time. Although, being a little different from the style of the evening, they had a dark atmospheric presence. They played songs from their full length “Convenience Has Poisoned Our Souls” and new ones from their upcoming release, leaving everyone more than satisfied and with very good impressions.
After a while, a young and beautiful woman with a guitar climbed the stage. Originating in Greece, Iphigenia (Foie Gras) who grew up in San Francisco, began to sing hypotonic with her blasé look. Ostensibly innocent but definitely with a soul full of demons waiting to be released, she made a pleasant surprise. When the audience least expected it, a distorted voice sounded reminding something like listening to the little girl from the Exorcist. Eerie and mystic case that you absolutely need to listen to her releases because what we witnessed is only the beginning. Also it is so rare nowadays to see women what is more being alone onstage and doing something for it so respect.
The moment everyone inside packed Death Disco was waiting for, had arrived. The stage was prepped for the “ritual” with lighted candles, a bottle of bourbon, a human skull and heavy smell of incense. TJ Cowgill aka King Dude (with his hand healthy this time) appeared all dressed in black and began “preaching” with his songs about the Devil, sending everyone from the audience to a different state of mind. With “Lord I’m Coming Home” and “Lucifer’s The Light of the World” the Self-proclaimed Luciferian and officially named as ambassador of the Greater Church of Lucifer(GCOL), who can marry couples too, spoke about religion and the need to believe somewhere; either Christianism or Satanism.
“Devil’s Eyes” and “Vision in Black” while the doomed spirits were singing along with the drunken ghosts of the dark sinister corners of the Americana past, clouded the atmosphere. The sound was very good and TJ performed from the depths of this blackened heart of his. More relaxed thus and more open-minded everybody accepted with chills his occult melodies, that sent messages of hope and inspiration invoking the power of Self, with the chords of his guitar. In-between his songs he had a genuine and heartfelt interaction with the crowd, treating everyone with his whiskey and taking requests.
For the encore, King Dude’s trusted satanic brothers from our own, Skull & Dawn, wearing black vestments accompanied him to three more songs of dark folk & satanic hysteria with highlight the “Fear is All you know” played astoundingly. It changed the whole vibe of the show up until that moment, leaving everyone electrified and dazzled. It was really an awesome night that will stay until the next time… thank you King Dude.
