Korpiklaani, apart from being one of the most popular bands of their generation, are also one of the most productive. “Jylha” is hopefully their eleventh complete effort. Those who follow them know more or less what they will hear. Up-tempo and fun folk metal. The kind of music that takes away all the worries of your day life and pushes you to the fridge to open a cold beer.
Korpiklaani are equally entertainers and artists/musicians and whenever you have the chance to watch them live just do it in order to get in the mood for dancing and drinking. So listening to “Jylha”, you will easily have a good time but you will also easily realize its weaknesses. It has both strong and more relaxed moments, as we the Finnish have offered us in the past this is a positive thing as it creates a welcome diversity. However, a major disadvantage of the album is its total duration, as in the one hour that it lasts; it does not manage to keep your interest undiminished.
I think that if the album had 2-3 compositions less, the final result would be would be more solid and easier to hear it in its entirety. On the other hand, of course, we are talking about a very experienced band, which has developed a recognizable sound and writes strong albums featuring very good songs. I will put it differently since they now have a relatively large discography. “Jylha” isn’t their finest moment, but it’s not one of their weakest either. You will enjoy listening to it a few times but after a while, you will look for another album to listen to. Despite that we have to thank them for making us happy as long as the record spins an album that makes us forget for a while forgotten this objectively difficult period of our lives.
