The French Kosmos return better than ever with their third release, Ashes of the Orphic Dream. Classic black metal guitars, brutal vocals and raw drums compose a typical representative of its kind, faithful to the old Norwegian school. They are so old school that this disc could very well have circulated 20 years ago, although this is not a bad thing. On the contrary, an occasional return to one’s roots is good, especially when it is not a simple copy or reproduction of the past but grafted with new elements instead.
From Blank Earth’s atmospheric introduction up to the very end Nekros, Sorthei and xOv offer us a real black metal album but with two exceptions. These are the fifth and seventh track ( C.T.K.E. and Kosmos respectively) which are slightly offbeat. I personally like the experimental sound but in this case I can’t understand exactly what the Kosmos members had in mind. Maybe these two songs just don’t agree with me or maybe they really don’t belong in this album; in any case I don’t feel that these particular experimentations add to the whole. Fortunately however they do not retract from the pure black metal feeling from the rest of the songs.
Lyric-wise they entwine mythological elements, like the Titans, with a philosophical approach on the dark nature of human kind and the effect we have on the planet.
