The time is ripe for Kult of Taurus from Thessaloniki to deeply shake the waters with their sophomore full length release, entitled “Adversarial Paths: The Sinister Essence”; a murky, bleak release, adorned with reeking sounds, that despite all that, manages to maintain some distance from the traditional black metal sounds we’ve grown accustomed to.
A record full of mystery, darkness and mixed feelings that rush through every devoted listener. Everything starts with a rather eerie introductory one-minute track, via which bells, voices and imposing background sounds, set the pompous mood. The seven tracks that compile this record are classified as multi – leveled and unconventional. Elaborating on that, what strikes you from the very first time is the approach on the drumming. Hellscum doesn’t walk on that dry, traditional black – oriented drumming path, but chooses to interlard the tracks with great changes and quite interesting twists and turns that fill each track and transfuse an experimental and special character to the entire record. You could say that some points would actually be used in a progressive project, without this downgrading this particular album. On guitars, the choices made in riffs and solos prove that everything you listen to is a product of constant thinking and elaborate picking. No pointless playing; instead, greatly circumspect choices that embrace all of the tracks the best possible way, with twists only were needed. One more characteristic of this album is Sarpedon’s vocal switches. The swappings of his voice and the changes in its quality are apparent, holding tight our interest and infusing a special diversity (comparing this release with releases by other contemporary bands). Going through screams filled with pure hatred to sough voices, bringing incantations or invocations in mind and vice versa, is remarkable (like in “Edafio”).
Succeeding into making a multi – prismatic record and for the band managing to distance itself from conventional recipes in order to produce something purely personal, can only be proven right. Both the artists as individuals and as a band differentiate from the wave and stand out alone. “Adversarial Paths: The Sinister Essence” offers this.
As a final point, the only way to fully indulge and absorb right from the spring the feelings Kult of Taurus conveys and to become one with the vibrations they send out, is to look towards the ceiling and get lost into thoughts about our whole race being a speck of dust in the vast universe.
