Lady Beast comes from Pittsburgh, United States, and as understood by the band’s apparent name, is a classic heavy metal band with female vocals by Deborah Levine.
Lady Beast had released their first work back in 2012, an eight track EP, titled with the band’s own name. This summer, they returned with their new release, their first full length album, entitled “Lady Beast II”, originally released in 12” vinyl by Cobra Cabana Records, and in June a CD was released by Inferno Records.
The influences from Judas Priest, Motorhead, Diamond Head, and the general range of NWOBHM, are clear. They are characterized by the Heavy / Speed hybrid, with fast guitars and intricate, loud solos, especially during the second half of each song. The “II” album is aimed at devoted fans of Heavy Metal, but can easily be heard by everyone. Compared to their first release, their sound is more mature, tied and noticeably more attentive.
The vocals are clean and basically melodic, with some technique; however they lack the variety and multi – perspectivity I want to hear in such records. Although there are some vocal twists, however, they need that “something” to make think she’s got a great voice. Deb needs some more practice to gain even greater vocal extent, but what we hear is not disappointing.
The tracks are mostly based on the logic of a basic riff, on which all the other compositions are built. The good thing is that we have both fast and mid – tempo guitars, giving some variety. The compositions are saved by the well-structured solos, in which you can distinguish the passion of the band. They will certainly be improved in their next jobs.
The drums do not show any particular character. They are there to fill the space nicely and give impetus to the compositions. However, I would like them to be a little more “forward”. In this way I believe the effect they’d have would be even greater.
In the future Lady Beast might have to pay a little more attention to their production. With better mix and master, their work will definitely sound better.
Generally, Lady Beast seems to have a future in what they do; all they have to do is to just add a little more imagination; experiment a bit, to acquire their own distinctive sound.
