Lake of Tears – Greater Art || The Foundations of Sorrow

Greater Art is the debut studio album by the Swedish band Lake of Tears, released in 1994. Marking the band’s entrance into the metal scene, the album presents a raw and straightforward fusion of doom metal and death metal, reflecting the early 1990s European extreme metal milieu.

Emerging from Borås, Sweden, Lake of Tears crafted Greater Art with a heavy and crushing sound that leans heavily into the defining characteristics of doom metal—slow tempos, low-tuned guitars, and a thick, heavy atmosphere—while integrating the aggressive elements typical of death metal. This blend creates an intense musical experience characterized by its coarse, ragged vocal delivery, crushing riffage, and a somber mood evocative of despair and impending doom.

Musically, the album drops the band into the heart of doom metal’s aesthetic, with sludgy, distorted guitars and dense rhythms that emphasize a bleak, oppressive atmosphere. The death metal influence laces the album with more aggressive vocal styles and a heavier, more visceral edge, distinguishing it from traditional doom metal releases.

Lyrically and thematically, Greater Art explores dark and morose subjects consistent with both doom and death metal genres, contributing to the overall aura of hopelessness and melancholy. This approach laid the groundwork for Lake of Tears’ evolving sound in later albums, where they would integrate more melodic, gothic, and psychedelic elements.

The album opens with “Under the Crescent,” which sets a dark, romantic mood with melodic guitar breaks and vintage keyboard textures, creating a shadowy and haunting atmosphere. This mood is sustained through “Eyes of the Sky,” a heavy and powerful track delivering a punchy, doom-laden sound without restraint.

“Upon the Highest Mountain” stands out as a philosophical, epic journey. It begins with an acoustic passage leading the listener to an ethereal realm, before launching into hard riffs symbolizing a climb to a lofty summit. This track’s dynamic structure embodies the pain and triumph of inner harmony and struggle.

“As Daylight Yields” evokes a chilling autumn morning’s tranquility, blending melodic themes, impressive vocals, and a catchy chorus with a psychedelic guitar solo. This song acts as a bridge in the album’s conceptual flow towards the sound explored more deeply in later works.

“Twilight” is hypnotic and psychedelic, combining typical doom metal traits with atypical distorted vocals and cosmic keyboard solos, enhancing the album’s dreamlike and emotional scope. This track solidifies the album’s concept around darkness and melancholy.

“Burn Fire Burn” breaks into a fast-tempo, aggressive attack that contrasts with the slower doom passages, reflecting the highs and lows of emotional intensity.

“The Path of the Gods (Upon the Highest Mountain, Part 2)” serves as a sequel to the earlier epic track, continuing the atmospheric journey with a blend of dark riffs and melodic introspection.

As a debut, Greater Art stands as a testament to Lake of Tears’ origins in underground doom and death metal. It captures the raw energy and bleak emotional scope that defined early ’90s extreme metal and provided a foundation for the band’s artistic progression in subsequent years.

The Circle Music has reissued Greater Art as a remastered 2025 release. The reissue is available in various formats, including a limited box set, remastered CDs, limited edition LPs in different colors, and a limited cassette tape.
