“Brevity is the sister of talent.”, said Anton Chekhov, and he proved this by writing several short stories many times shorter than five sentences, while his narratives also had condensed speech. About talent and small texts I seem to want to justify the small text of my review -yes, this is what I’m trying to do-, but speaking of talent I couldn’t help talking about Like Rats. Of course, it’s not the first time we’ve written about them in Invader. How could we ignore the rotten sound that stirs without confusing Entombed, Morbid Angel and above all Obituary, entails and vice versa Celtic Frost, with angry hardcore. On this third studio album of the Chicagoans quintet we may have less hardcore elements if we compare it with their two previous albums, without losing in directness, of course. Although the death elements have given more emphasis, however, there are several progressive riffs with the HM-2 aesthetic lingering imperiously, which blend with the galvanized sharp mid-tempo guitar parts flawlessly. If next to Ringworm and Xibalba we can put Like Rats name comfortably, then with the same ease we can now do the same for Nails and Black Breath.
