Third part for the Smoke the Fuzz Fest and Metal Invader wouldn’t miss it for the world. Post-Mortem Edition took place at VOX on Iera Odos, at the heart of Athens and probably was one of the year’s top events. It was a splendid weekend with our post-metal heroes Russian Circles and Cult of Luna along with their partners in crime, Helen Money and Julie Christmas, respectively. Dig in for more.

We’re still trying to get it together from last night’s apocalypse; we’re in crazy live mode, full of hope and heading down to VOX for the second day in a row. There’s a little and justified delay, because of the only one act, no other than Cult of Luna and their collaborator Julie Christmas and we’re off. I’m getting goose bumps on the ambient sounds at the beginning of “A Greater Call”, the band makes an imposing entrance and with its melodies introduces the frontwoman, Julie and with Johaness Persson mark-scream we’re on board and ready for the downfall. We’re some of the few lucky ones to witness this unique collaboration and it was truly an honor. Personally I had many doubts about Mariner when it was released, because I believe that both gave much more on music personally than in their collaboration. Here I got, for the first time so intensely, the big difference that exists between the experience of a record listening and a live show. The expressiveness and professionalism that they presented made me daydream to a theater stage and be lost to the actors’ rendering. Last night surfaced the ordinary gig and became an unforgettable experience. On the technical side, Johaness’ guitar became kind of blurry from time to time and I’d like Julie to be higher in the mix at times, since her voice is one of the most expressive ones on the extreme music. But they’re just minor things in comparison to the greatness of the whole. We witnessed “Mariner” on its entirety and the band now leaves the stage. After a little while and accompanied by the audience’s frenzy the Cult of Luna return to the stage without Julie and make a very clear point: “We don’t do encores”. However, they perform the masterpieces from Vertikal, “I: The Weapon” & “In Awe Of” and make us remember why we always loved them. They seemed to enjoy it rather much as well, even though the made some small mistakes. They’re forgiven. In the end, they waved goodbye all together, clearly touched, especially the lady of the group because it was the last stop of the tour. I only hope to see them all again.
