Modu is a new venue for live show in the heart of Athens, just a few minutes away from Metaxourgio Station (Metro) and has been extremely active in the cities events. As direct result they paid their homage to the country’s extreme underground music scene with a 3-day fest, ‘Extreme Assault’ that aspires to become regular. We wouldn’t miss it for the world here at Metal Invader, but unfortunately we couldn’t attend all days.
The night began with the local youngsters Overcliff on stage. Sound mixing wasn’t an ally for them, but an enemy instead, even though it improved slightly a bit after the half of their set. They didn’t let this problem to hold them back and proved to us that they stand strong despite the deep waters they chose to swim to. Progressive death metal following the steps of Obscura with great doses of black metal and as a friend told me and I quote “They tore up the minor scale” which reminded me of Ulcerate. They were technically flawless and yet energetic on their performance with an excellent singer whose inhale vocals that chose to use at certain points I could live without, even though they were good quality-wise. On their about 40 minutes set, they played their own songs and a Belphegor cover. Not a bad start at all.
A few minutes to change over and here’s Dead Human Factory from Athens. Their intro sample gave me a bad hunch that came true. Their old-school death metal was not very well crafted and uninspired with lack of riffs and empty chords echoing through the annoying feedback of the guitarist/vocalist, an equipment problem which he didn’t even try the slightest to resolve. The drummer was very good, but it was impossible for him to save the day alone. The audience seemed to enjoy their performance, especially towards the end of their set where their communication became stronger.
Next up were Deacidified from Karditsa, the only band outside from Athens. That was the point where things heated up. The band grooved a lot, had a really playful mood and performed splendidly a part of their debut ‘Deceitful Wisdom’. People coiled in front of them from the start and sweated along with their brutal death metal.
We move on accordingly with Womb of Maggots. The sound became clearer; however the usual low end that accompanies the band on their gigs was missing. They played songs from their record ‘Decay of Humanity’ that the audience enjoyed a great deal and did a Slayer cover for ‘Raining Blood’ where everyone went wild. Speaking of wild… The singer was extreme in their songs and also on the pauses between them (haha).
It was time for Acid Death. Their fame and love for what they’re doing precedes them. They performed songs from their whole career. They were professional on stage and their sound was pretty good. Many rode along with their music and Savvas was excellent at communicating with the audience.
Every extreme music fan was full of smiles when he or she left. The organizing of the event went pretty well and everything happened on time, but the constant bad sound in almost every band left me with a bad taste. So this is the only remark I have to make. I wish all the best!
