Despite the difficulties of our time and the ticket’s price being high, the queue outside the venue was turning round the corner and people kept coming in, even when the gig started. Inside you couldn’t help but stare at the parts of the show Megadeth brought along with them, the videos and the elevated drum set which is for a while now in the care of mr Dirk Vrebeuren of Soilwork.
Megadeth came on stage right on time (21:15) in the crowded club. More than 2000 people awaited to see them. A short intro and “Hangar 18”. The sound was not good, Mustaine’s guitar was too low, the drums where very high, enough noise from the background – all these didn’t change during the entire show. It wasn’t what Megadeth sounds like live.
On the other hand you got Loureiro fit in and easily filling the shoes of the second guitarist in the band which is kinda difficult, if you think who were in his place. The “Threat Is Real” was next while later that night almost half their new album was played.
“Tornado of Souls” was dedicated to Nick Menza and then a new one.
In their setlist they ignored their 00’s, showed more emphasis in their 90’s and played the mandatory ones from the 80’s. So it’s not a surprise that many where disappointed from the absence of oldies but even that is a matter of taste and ends up in a conversation that can last for hours!
Some prerecorded parts and samples we heard worked positive, putting you even further in the mood of each song (specially in Sweating bullets) while their whole performance was good as always. It’s Megadeth we’re talking about after all. Ok, Mustaine’s vocals where not coming out right like always and add some bad sound there and the result is even more gross. So what?
“Poison Was The Cure”, “Trust”, “Tourlamond” was warmly welcomed by everybody while in “Peace Sells” besides the nearly epileptic videos Vic came in dressed in suit doing a chorography that should go in a Troma film. After a small break, they encored with “Holy Wars” which set the place on fire, they thanked their fans and wished them goodnight.
Compared to their previous visits in Greece (different places, different musicians, different times etc) they where better from that gig for Rockwave Fest in 2001, but not better than Sonisphere. (Their first gig in 1997 is out of the question).
We’re already waiting for the next time.
