The Norwegian occult / doomsters had managed to turn some eyes on them a couple of years back with their Mercyful Fate meets Pentagram meets Pagan Altar style of metal. Many found this group very interesting (as i too) and not unfairly i would say since Lucifer Leviathan Logos included some very good and promising pieces of music (man what a great song Master of The Temple is…) in a scene that was suffocating from the mediocrity it included. Occult to the bone, band name taken from the Aleister Crowley legacy, Satan, pentagrams and all that… but at least they had great songs. In 2014 they released an E.P that prepared us for the path they would follow on the next album and now Into Duat is scheduled for release in September from Cruz Del Sur.
With song titles such as Osiris, Horus the Avenger, Anubis etc. You understand that Into Duat deals with myths and gods of Egyptian mythology. The doom vibe is present in this release also as it strongly did in the first one, but the element of Mercyful Fate does not occur to the extent that was in Lucifer … Under other circumstances this would mean that the band has matured in terms of songwriting but that doesn’t seem to be the case with Into Duat. I can’t see this as the next step for the ambitious Norwegians. Ok, we have the cool oriental melodies, the vocals have improved (still they need more work, of course), I like that in times he sounds as if chanting ancient curses and the solos are great. It’s the songs themselves that do not have the, brilliance that characterized the material of their debut. It seems that they try to give the songs their own character but the whole thing sounds like scattered ideas, stapled material here and there. Some more epic elements have entered in their music as in Osiris and Horus The Avenger (which brings something from Slough Feg, perhaps the European tour with the Americans contributed (?) on the album) and Slaying Apophis reminded me of Iron Maiden especially in the chorus. Personally I expected much more from Into Duat. I would not call it boring, but it surely fails to convince the listener of its quality. That’s a shame, because they could have done wonders with this Egyptian thing. They must have pissed off an ancient spirit or something, i can’t explain it otherwise.
