British veteran music journalist Malcolm Dome, who coined the term “thrash metal” in the 1980s, has died yesterday at the age of 66.
The UK journalist got his start in the 1970s, writing for Record Mirror and Metal Fury magazines, before landing with Kerrang! upon its launch in 1981. His passing was reported by the website Louder, which encompasses the magazines Prog, Classic Rock, Record Mirror and Metal Hammer, all of which Dome contributed to during his lengthy journalism career.
Dome published books on bands like Metallica, Led Zeppelin and AC/DC. Eventually, he went on to become Editor of Metal Forces magazine and a regular commentator on Total Rock Radio. He is credited with popularising the term “thrash metal”, which he coined while writing about the 1984 Anthrax track ‘Metal Thrashing Mad’. Dome also co-wrote the book Encyclopedia Metallica in 1980, which may have inspired the legendary metal band’s name. More directly, he referred to Anthrax’s music as “thrash metal” while writing about the band’s song “Metal Thrashing Mad” in an article for Kerrang! magazine. Of course, that term would go on to describe Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and countless other bands.
He would later become a founding member of RAW rock magazine in 1988. In the early 90s, Malcolm Dome was the Editor of Metal Forces magazine, and also involved in the horror film magazine Terror, before returning to Kerrang! for a spell. With the launch of Classic Rock magazine in 1998 he became involved with that title, sister magazine Metal Hammer, and has also been a contributor to Prog magazine since its inception in 2009.
Iron Maiden tweeted: “We are all very much saddened and shocked to hear about the passing of our friend Malcolm Dome. He was fearless, intrepid, passionate and forthright as a journalist and latterly a broadcaster and we respected him immensely.”
Tributes have also come from Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, Ozzy Osbourne, Lars Ulrich, Slash, Motley Crue, Bernie Marsden, Mike Portnoy, Blackie Lawless, Devin Townsend, Doro Pesch, Motorhead’s Phil Campbell, Saxon, Luke Morley of Thunder, Charlie Benante, Arch Enemy’s Michael Arnott, Therapy?, Orange Goblin, Dino Cazares and more.
