Genre: Sludge/Black Metal
Country: Germany
Label: Nuclear Blast Records
Year: 2017
Since 2013 when these sludge/blacksters were introduced their selves, they are building a strong discography starting with the ‘Spit/White Nights’ single and through 2 really great full lengths (and some singles), they continue offering interesting releases until now and this year EP, ‘The Spell’. The EP features tracks that were supposed to be on ‘Ode to the Flame’, but the title track was actually been written in 2013. Still the song could have been in any of the band’s back catalogue showing that despite the progress on the writing or the mixing of the genres and the evolution on their sound they are focused on their musical vision. The title track features a guest appearance of Okoi Jones from BÖLZER, adding some savage vocals. A great song, combining excellent sludge and black metal elements, a punkish feeling and some dark clean guitars. The opener ‘Pest Crusade’ grabs you from the throat and shows a sludgier approaching. The drumming has a first role giving a pompous sound and a grooving style while the guitars are tuned in a raw punk way. ‘Age Of The Vril’ has a more doom vibe than the other 2 tracks. The chorus seems to be written for live performances as the anthemic lyrics ‘Come on and Ride, Ride with Me’ can be easily a crowd pleaser. So we are dealing here for a 3 track EP that is actually a gift to their fans, that will hold their name ‘hot’ for some months until their upcoming 3rd full length. And probably will add 2 more songs on their live setlist during the summer festivals as the tracks are great and definitely not relics or leftovers from their previous material. Strong.
