Megadeth – So Far, So Good… So What!

It’s the end of 1987. Metal and all of its genres experience their highest peak. From small clubs that host newcomers, to the stadiums that are packed with the big names and from the MTV that plays metal all day long to the fanzines that support the underground, metal is everywhere. Somewhere in that era, Megadeth released their 3rd album. After Chris Poland and Gar Samuelson got fired for excessive drug use (no comments), mastermind Dave Mustaine brought Jeff Young and Chuck Behler (drum tech of Samuelson) to fill in guitars and drums.

“So Far, So Good… So What!” came after two masterpieces (each one in its own way) and before that one release that would be titled as the best ‘Deth album for lots of fans, “Rust In Peace”. Megadeth at any point in time was, is and will always be the reflection of Mustaine’s mood. Add the fact that this album sounds a bit small with an intro, a cover and only six songs. It gives the impression that it was released just to be released, instead of being the natural successor of “Peace Sells”. We don’t have to say things that have been said a thousand times about what was that mood back then. So there’s reason that this album is to be considered as their weakest during the 80’s.

Let’s go to the music part now. The album was released in the early 1988. All of the above have played a big role in the album’s sound which is not “So Far, So Good… So What!” compared to “Peace Sells…”. On the other hand the songs kick ass despite the sound! The fact that there are still songs from this album in their playlist says a lot. These are “In My Darkest Hour”, “Hook In Mouth” and the cover on “Anarchy In The U.K.” But even the not-so-popular “502”, “Liar” and “Set The World Afire” are now considered classics.

One other thing that is worth mentioning, are the lyrics written. Cynical, smart, enterprising; they may attack, they may sit back in the defense. However, their themes will always trouble you, even if you disagree with Mustaine. Despite the fact that this album was released in 1988, just by looking at the lyrics, you will realize that there are lots of things that have remained the same until today. I don’t know what they have chosen to show us at 5th of July but whatever they play from this album, is most certain that will draw a big smile on their fans’ faces. Plus the fact that they will shake some heads!

The arsenal of Megadeth can’t be rid they said

And if it comes the living will envy the dead!
