Besides the ten-year gap between “Pictures at an Exhibition” and “Lurking Fear”, this is the second time that we have to wait such a long time for a new Mekong Delta album. “Tales of a Future Past” comes 6 years after the really good “In a Mirror Darkly”. It is like another day in job for these Germans as nothing seems capable to make them change their route, and I mean nothing! The prog elements are their basis and thrash ones follow. The compositions are definitely adventurous if not stressful for the listener.
The tempo changes are surprising and the guitars unique. The lyrics are as always full of quality and address to a special if not peculiar audience. Instrumental songs are present once again in one of their albums. The references in classic music are here too, but not so obvious, still we can hear many especially in “Landscape 2 – Waste Land”. Of course, all these elements are filtered through Mekong Delta’s personal prism and really make sense.
I believe that Mekong Delta are so special and have a certain audience that will buy this album. I know that they deserved more in their career, but this is a different conversation to do and doesn’t change much on how I see this year’s album. An album that is waiting for you to discover it. Not their best release, but definitely a worth buying one that furthermore intrigues you to listen to.
