It’s not the first time we see a project that primarily was meant to pay tribute to a band or mourn the loss of a band’s member to develop into a regular full time band. I guess most of you know that Memoriam’s birth was after the tragic death of Martin “Kiddie” Kearns, the drummer from BOLT THROWER, back in September 2015. And despite the fact that their debut album was rather flat and one dimension, almost boring and the audience was a bit frustrated from it, nobody even thought that Memoriam was a dead case. No one could ignore that the band’s members have been part of groups such as Cerebral Fix, Colostomy, Sacrilege, Napalm Death, Anaal Nathrakh, Benediction, and of course Bolt Thrower. The turning point was to find the right chemistry among such great musicians – and mostly friends- that shared the same vision. While ‘For The Fallen’ was recorded rather hurriedly and after the band members got together to play covers of songs that had influenced them throughout their careers within the death metal scene, however the new album has more personality and without losing it’s paying-tribute purpose, it still seems featuring more focused songs and more well played compositions. The final result is certainly much better than their debut but a step down to Bolt Thrower’s releases. Their old school Death Metal is full of Doom elements and the haunting aura of Bolt Thrower is always present but not in a negative-disturbing way. All of you that love band in the veins of Gruesome, you won’t be disappointed and how could you do that, when you can find some brutal riffing and the characteristic well aged Willets growls on some excellent tracks here such as ‘The New Dark Ages’, ‘From the Flames’, ‘Bleed The Same’ and ‘Weaponized Fear’. Extra kudos for the brilliant artwork cover and the exceptionally impressive lyrics.
