Mentor – Guts, Graves And Blasphemy

Genre: Hardcore/Punk/Black Metal
Country: Poland
Label: Arachnophobia Records
Year: 2016

No, they are not the Greek blackmetallers MENTOR, the well known and beloved band from Karditsa, but they are a new group from Sosnowiec and Katowice, Poland, made by members of Thaw in 2011. The ‘Guts, Graves and Blasphemy’ album is their first complete work, but also their first studio attempt, since there is no other release in their discography.

Although they describe themselves as blackened rock ‘n’ roll, what we have here is simply a classic hardcore band, ‘crowned’ with many thrash touches. The speed and the punk rhythm is the key component of the album, while the … Sabbath-ic sludge mid tempo parts and some more American-style death metal glimpses give it a character more dark than uplifting, without this meaning that it will exhilarate the listener. Even the length of time, which barely exceeds the thirty minutes, is exactly as much is needed to be satisfying, without becoming tedious. Okay, the riff ideas are not something special -besides some very specific ones like the rock ‘n’ roll beginning of ‘Murder Beach’ – but it is quite easy to be listened, whilst the vocals are fucking awesome and boost the album definitely one level above that it would be with another vocalist, in particular with another vocal style. The only thing that, perhaps, not absolutely amazed me is the relatively ‘clean’ production, I would prefer a little bit more ‘dirty’ sound. However, that does not mean that it lacks in that part.

However, for a band that until yesterday was just a stranger, and for an album that I discovered completely randomly, the listening time has passed quite pleasantly. I admit that I will look forward to their next release.
