With members from… everywhere (Yixja and Alkurion are from United States, Aslak Karlsen Hauglid from Norway and Chris G from Australia), Mesmur are playing Funeral Doom Metal. The band was born in 2013 and the same named album is their debut in discography.
Pressing the play button and playing the «Deprivation» I listen exactly what I expected to hear. Low guitar tuning, one… beat per minute, melodies full of darkness and keys-background, coming from trip to unknown. Playing the «Lapse» (the best track in my opinion) and I listen something completely different. Candlemass melodies, while the chaotic part from 4’46” till the end of the track burned my last brain cells had left. Slow, excruciatingly slow I would say, with a post lead riff pierces your head. The piano at the beginning of «Abnegate» reminded me of depressive black like Happy Days and Lifelover, I felt like I’m locked in a basement and the air around is running out, while the guitars combined with the double bass drum and the «tormenting» vocals create a fairly «dark» result. The intro of «Descend» could be a mournful soundtrack of an epic movie scene. Only the beginning, since the remaining song «moves» in different «paths», more like a My Dying Bride style, with an awesome lead riff and transitions of fast and slow double bass drum. The «Mesmur» ends with «Osmosis», which starts with a combination of keys, samples and drums, and is played again after a small part with guitars. The part with the vocals at 3’38” is probably the best of the album, while the depressive feeling makes its appearance again in the middle of the track, where the piano is combined perfectly with a guitar chord, flute and violin.
Generally, «Mesmur» is a good album, a remarkable debut for new band, and specifically will impress the fans of this genre.
