Jaw-dropping riffs, pioneering ideas, compositions that are completely out of the box and vocals that manage to pin you down…You’ll find none of it in the EP of “Monasteries” titled “The Empty Black”. Even though the genre is not known for its creativity there are a lot of descent bands out there that manage to stand out. Unfortunately, “Monasteries” is not one of them.
Most of the riffs are dissonant and syncopated. To be objective though, I have to admit that there are some tempo shifts that change the overall mood and some pretty groovy parts; yet they are just descent. In a meaningless technique showoff there are some dissonant guitar licks that follow the trend of our time. I wasn’t impressed by any of the 7 tracks that are contained in the EP, yet the latest ones are obviously better than the first ones (what caught my attention was “Dreadwaste”). Naturally, the drummer is performing seminally but that’s not enough to keep the listener’s interest. I won’t even mention the deep lyrics that are somewhat like that: “Close my eyes and hope for a better day, each passing moment turns blue to grey” (“Flatline” – 3:08)
Instead of a conclusion I’ll say that neither the low guitar tuning, nor the excellent production, nor the high level of musicianship are enough for the music to be good. What is needed most is inspiration. And that’s what “Monasteries” lack. Perhaps we’ll get to listen to something better from the band in the future.
