Mortals (Brooklyn/U.S.A.) after releasing the 2014 album “Cursed to See the Future” via Relapse Records return with a split EP on Broken Limbs Recordings with Philadelphia’s Repellers. Even though Mortals have only one song in this split release, although lasting almost nine minutes, still their characteristic sound dominates this release. High on Fire’s sludgy melody is here along with the pomp drums and the heavy as fuck chugging riffs. Crafting rhythm and thrash/black parts blend in a song that should be considered a more a black metal one than a sludge one. A really great song indeed. Repellers are from Philadelphia and their crust is dark enough, I would say moodywith a blackened essence. “Descent” starts promising and turns to be an epic death melodic to my ears in the veins of Swedish bands (without Viking or pagan elements though). Their guitars are clean, especially in comparison with Mortals’ but suitable to their sound. There’s a groove on their songs while the pummeling drumming is rather confusing in “From Jericho To Ai” (their second track). “False Solace” is closer to “Descent” with a melodic guitar theme that is showing some nice songwriting skills. Nice release mostly for introducing to us Repellers and why not keeping Mortals name hot. Of course in a reasonable price, you have to buy it!
