On December 17 Greek Speed Metallers MURDER ANGELS are releasing their self-titled debut album.
The album is made of 8 tracks and it opens with “Black Lightning”, a song that will instantly introduce you to the band’s style, with lyrics such as “No Surrender, forever Speed Metal” in the chorus and its old school sound. Followed by “Fire and Axe” which is Thrash-ier and more up-tempo. Next is “Unleash”, which is one of the tracks that stood out most to me, with its Speed/Thrash elements, it brought memories of old bands, such as Paradox. Fourth track “Face the Master” changes into a more Teutonic influenced sound while “Ways of Sin” brings the characteristic Murder Angels style, back. “The Chapel” is the intro to “Haunted by Darkness” that starts with an acoustic solo by the lead guitarist and then evolves in a powerful yet melodic mid-tempo hit. The closing of the album is “Bloodfields”, which is the highlight of it, speedy, more epic with war themed lyrics.
Overall, as a first attempt is very good, especially if you are a fan of the ‘80s sound. Frontman’s heavy metal vocals are great with the characteristic falsettos that blend well with the twin guitar leads and the solid rhythm section.
Unfortunately, the issue with this album is the production. Bass and drums could definitely be higher in the mix (in some songs you can’t even hear the bass)
4.5/6 (Mainly because of the production)
