Swedish death metal has never been short of bands willing to descend into the abyss, but only a few understand how to make that descent feel genuinely dangerous. NEKRODAWN belong to the latter category. With Covenant Of Carnage, the band return after their acclaimed debut Sculpted By Torture with a record that does not merely continue their assault—it sharpens it, darkens it, and drives it considerably deeper into the ground.
Formed by musicians with links to respected names such as GRAVE, CENTINEX, INTERMENT, THE CROWN, and HYPOCRISY, NEKRODAWN carry an impressive pedigree. However, Covenant Of Carnage never sounds like a nostalgic exercise or a collection of familiar influences. The band use the traditional Swedish death metal vocabulary as a foundation, then build upon it with a blackened atmosphere, a harsher modern production, and an unwavering desire to make every riff feel physically oppressive.
From the opening moments of “Neath Skies of Iron”, the album establishes its intentions. The guitars arrive with a cutting, abrasive tone, while the rhythm section provides the kind of weight that makes the entire performance feel like an approaching catastrophe. NEKRODAWN are not interested in easing the listener into their world. The door is kicked open, the lights are extinguished, and the listener is immediately trapped inside a landscape of rust, smoke, and violence.
The album’s greatest strength is its consistency. “Massacre Eternal” and “Covenant of Carnage” embody the band’s ability to combine speed with crushing mid-tempo passages, creating an attack that never becomes one-dimensional. The faster sections strike with the expected savagery, but it is the slower, heavier moments that often leave the deepest mark. NEKRODAWN understand that brutality is not measured only in velocity; sometimes the most effective blow is the riff that drags itself forward with absolute, merciless weight.
“Liberty’s Pyre” introduces a particularly sinister quality, with its blackened edge becoming more prominent without overwhelming the death metal core. The atmosphere remains bleak rather than theatrical, adding a sense of looming disaster to the album’s already hostile character. This darkness also returns throughout tracks such as “Crowned Devourer” and “Incarnate Doom”, where the riffs seem less interested in simple destruction than in creating an environment from which escape is impossible.
The songwriting is direct, but not careless. Each track is constructed around memorable guitar movements, forceful rhythmic transitions, and carefully placed changes in intensity. “Feeding the Greed Machine” and “Drones of Deceit” stand out for the way they combine aggression with a sharper, almost anthemic sense of momentum. There is no unnecessary ornamentation, but there is enough variation to prevent the album from becoming a blur of interchangeable violence.
The lyrical and atmospheric identity of Covenant Of Carnage is built around collapse—social, moral, and existential. Titles such as “Condemned to Existence”, “Claws of Pestilence”, and “Desolation Reigns” reinforce the album’s vision of a world consumed by corruption and decay. These themes are familiar territory within extreme metal, yet NEKRODAWN present them with conviction rather than empty exaggeration.
The vocals are suitably savage, delivering the material with a deep and hostile presence that complements the guitars. They do not dominate the compositions; instead, they function as another layer of punishment, emerging from the mix like a voice already shaped by the same darkness that surrounds the music. This balance allows the riffs to remain central while keeping the overall performance threatening and intense.
With Covenant Of Carnage, NEKRODAWN prove that Sculpted By Torture was not an isolated burst of potential. This is a stronger, darker, and more assured statement from a band that knows exactly what it wants to achieve. The record respects the foundations of Swedish death metal while refusing to remain imprisoned by them.
