It’s obscure metal time. Nemesis is an English band that released a 4 tracks vinyl back in 1984, a very rare release that was actually known to only a handful of collectors. What most don’t know is that the band was active up until 1993, then reunited in 2003 and released 2 more metal CDs. A bunch of die-hard metallers that never gave up and kept playing the music they loved, classic metal in the vein of Judas Priest, Manowar etc. This alone is enough for me; I totally respect them for their devotion to metal.
As far as the “Unleash the Beast” album is concerned, it’s a reissue of their 4 track vinyl, plus 9 songs, the best ones from their later releases, plus a totally unreleased track. Their music style is pure and classic metal, well played and delivered with passion. The songs of 1989 are rawer and with a more primitive sound, keeping in mind that this was a low budget private release. They have that great atmosphere of the ‘80s metal that some of us old farts love. The release includes one of the most epic songs in the history of British Metal, the same name song, Nemesis. I can’t really describe the feelings I experienced a few years ago when I first listened to this song; took me ages to find the original vinyl but this song made the effort worth while. A true war hymn. Maybe this would be how Omen would sound if they were British. As for the later songs that are on the album, most of them are very good. I really like all of their releases, so for me this record was kind of a Best-of release. I think this release is a big opportunity for metal fans to learn about a band that they probably never even heard of, maybe it is time to right this wrong. With song titles like “Forever in Metal” (total 2nd period of Manowar worship), “The sound of Metal”, “Kingdom of Steel”, I am sure you know what to expect to listen.
