I really, really tried to listen to this one. More than once or twice, actually when I’m not very much fond of an album I give it many tries to make sure it’s not just me. And considering how much I love the Swedish 80s heavy metal scene, I was more than eager to listen to it. Unfortunately, Night don’t live up to the high Swedish standard. The album is flat and boring. The cover artwork doesn’t make it any better, but I’ll leave that aside, since many heavy metal diamonds have covers much worse than this one. I guess that Night try to catch the early 80s heavy metal revival train, but right now, there are many other bands that do it way better – not to mention some old chaps who are still around and they remind us why they became so big in the first place. “Soldiers in Time”’s best (or least worse, it depends on your half-empty or half-full glass of water) moments were found on “We’re not born to walk away” and “Above the Ground”, but these ones could suit much better on a new “retro” heavy metal collection of a “retro” heavy metal record company (too much “retro” there) with titles such as “Defenders of the new past” or something like that. The occasional acoustic moments won’t add anything on the account of variety or inspired atmosphere/dynamics. They have the prospect to do something better. But they don’t sound “hungry” enough to prove that they walk it like they talk it. There are many better albums than this one out there. Considering the economical crisis that scourges us poor Greeks, most of you may understand my point. Until the next one.
