It may seem weird to some of you but more often than not I prefer (and actually enjoy more) listening to new releases from underground bands instead of “famous” ones. Yes, sometimes it is risky because I never know if what I will listen to will be worth the time I spend for it or something so shitty that will make me actually curse every wasted second, but the energy and the direct connection with fans an underground band can have is something many behemoths of every genre have lost.

No Second Chance from Thessaloniki are such a band. If I had to use one word for “Twisting The Truth”, their third release, that word would be violence. If I could use two more then the phrase would be “non stop violence”. It’s only natural though for a band that has elements not only from the purely metal genres of death and thrash but also from the hardcore scene. The result is simply 8 songs full of hate, anger and energy.

Those specific elements that characterize this band and their current release make me believe that No Second Chance are one of the bands that belong on the scene, performing live. Yes, we can listen to them at our house or in a metal bar but to fully appreciate them we must listen to them live while we are in the mosh pit, banging our heads till our brains leak out of our ears.

Finally I cannot but mention their cover, which combined with their album’s title, prepares us for what their lyrics are about. A monkey’s headsurrounded by images of the 20th century. And the message of “Twisting the Truth” (is such a message exists of course and it is not something that I imagine) is so simple but at the same time so important: have we become simple lab rats, fed “information” until our reality becomes so distorted that we can’t tell truth from lie? At the end of “No option”, specifically at 3:30, there is a sample for a drama/comedy, its title can be loosely translated as “Learn, my child”. The sample is from a point in the movie when one of the actors shouts “Tell the truth! The truth!” in a court, something his own father who raised him to be “truthful and obedient” cannot even see (telling the truth was, of course, out of the question). That lost truth, or the lie that has won humanity’s hearts and minds should make us think. No Second Chance do exactly that, they express the rage born from thinking what’s really going on, in a very good way.
