Genre: Black Metal
Country: France
Label: Avantgarde Music
Year: 2015

The first time I’ve got in touch with Nocturnal Depression was at the end of 00’s when I had listened to their very good debut album “Nostalgia – Fragments of a Broken Past” (and I was surprised with the title track that reminded me “My Friend of Misery” of Metallica). Since then I follow them• fair band, without any poor release.

French band, from Grenoble, with several changes in their composition over the years, and Lord Lokhraed now (after the leaving of Herr Suizid) be the one that is responsible for (almost) everything. And I say “almost”, because the guy is suffering from ectrodactyly, a disease that makes the fingers resemble something between a pig foot and a lobster claw, and because of this he may not be able to do some things.

Regarding the “Spleen Black Metal” now? Melancholic, gloomy black metal, which fortunately is far from the classic, tiring dsbm, that tends to be fashionable nowadays. The long (relatively) in duration compositions, the lengthy musical themes and the… bipolar transition between fast and slow tempo parts, are making a… pleasantly unpleasant result, while the beautiful acoustic melodies and some parts with violin (especially in the title track) give it a… strange medieval touch. Lokhraed’s vocals are always in the same style, creepy, full of pain, hatred and despair, while the production is quite “clean”, which for some may not be compatible with that music genre• let them listen the “Spleen Black Metal”.

If I had to make a list of the best black metal albums for the first half of 2015, the “Spleen Black Metal” would be definitely in the top three. “Heavy”album, he keeps you there, “stuck” from the first to the last second, without being tired. The fans of the genre will love it, and with this release Nocturnal Depression will make new ones. And if you want to know my favorite track from the album, this is the “Acédie” with its awesome riffs!
