Although Nocturnal are productive as hardly anyone else in the genre with over 20 releases, including splits, demos, dvd, collections and EPs (competing Nunslaughter in the number of releases), they have released only two studio albums! “Violent Revenge” is their second album (during their 9 until then and 13 until now years of career); almost five years since their debut “Arrival of the Carnivore” came out in December 2004 (which is actually amazing). Timing when “Violent Revenge” was released was almost perfect, since their name constantly gained strength (beyond the underground scene) mostly after the display of Nocturnal’s logo on Necro’s leather jacket on the cover art of Darkthrone’s “Dark Thrones and Black Flags” in 2008, (a figure like Eddie serving as a landmark on their albums during 2007-2010).
The record’s sound reminds you of ’87-’89. Catchy compositions, approachable by a wide audience, even though it’s 100% Speed / Thrash with many heavy metal riff and black vocals. Ten tracks full of badass attitude and full speed attacks, causing strokes. Especially the opening track “Hellhunt” and the lengthy “aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrngggghhhhhh” opening scream, prepares you for the epic written by Nocturnal. Nocturnal remind me of Sodom, Venom, Possessed and Bewitched, although it seems that Destruction was their biggest influence. Despite the many releases prior to “Violent Revenge”,Nocturnal hasn’t lost their creativity, their inspiration and their unique way of performing their songs. Icing on the cake are Tyrannizer’s vocals (yes, she is a woman with goolies bigger than any of those twats in the genre) that clearly demolish buildings. Tyrannizer replaced the long-standing frontman of the band, Metallic Mayhem. Despite the slight change in the vocals, everything worked out fine, as if nothing has happened, so the comparison with Sabina Classen (Holy Moses) seems reasonable. And just to think that these two ladies could be on stage, the only thought that goes through your mind is a German musical coup d’etat. This record is ideal for fans of Aura Noir, Destruction, Sodom and vinyl. Tracks that stand out are “Atomic Warfare”, “Death is the Answer”, “Beast of Hades” and “Swarm of Insects”. Wearing a bullet belt while listening to the album is left to anyone’s discretion and is considered optional…
