Once again, Germany shows us that their staff of the thrash and extreme scene still has a lot to give us. Obsessör, a relatively new four-member band, formed in 2009, combines Thrash with Black of course keeping the feel of the cult 80’s, concluding in a quite remarkable result. This year, they present their second Full – Length disc, titled “Assassins of the Pentagram” which includes 10 tracks.
The disc is inaugurated by “Return of the Usurper”. A pretty dark synth melody opens slowly the track and then a loud, high-pitched old-school thrash riff invades. The guitar riffing remains similar throughout the disc and so as the structure of the songs. High frequency fast riffs, with melodies sometimes playing in the background of the main riff completely filling the “rotten and dark” feeling that is overall brought out, while the structure follows primarily the classical line type including the main riff, the chorus, bridge and solo.
The vocals are mostly low-pitched growls while there are also gang vocals which are mainly noticed in the choruses. On the other hand, what caused a great impression to me is the fact that the singer is not afraid to give an extra touch of old-school, adding some greatly high-pitched vocals, always using the echo as effect. Indeed, this happens in places you least expected it and the remarkable thing is that (in my opinion) it does not spoil the overall feeling of the tracks.
Drums on the other hand, have this old and raw sound using reverb enough so that it becomes even more profound. The composition moves from crossover, d-beat, groove rhythms and sometimes even blastbeat. The bass as expected follows the guitar and the break of the drums, while its main purpose is adding volume within the tracks.
In conclusion, I do not consider it necessary to analyze each track separately, since they have more or less the same feeling and structure. Their sound, like I mentioned above, takes us to several old times with a production that certainly does not bring to mind band 21st century and I could tell that it kindly reminds me of the Greeks, Slaughtered Priest. The only sure thing is they have a big course ahead of them and the perspectives to reach quite high on the extreme scene.
